If you depend on a hosting service, you need them to be worth every penny. The following are signs they may not be holding up their end of the bargain.
Uptime
No hosting company can ever guarantee 100% uptime, but they should get as close as possible. Uptime refers to how much of the time your website is up and running the way it’s supposed to be. There are countless reasons a server could go down momentarily and plenty for why it would be taken offline on purpose. No matter what, though, your server should be supporting an active website 99% of the time.
If you find that this isn’t the case if you check the data and find out that your site is down more than 1% of the time, it’s time to make some changes. This is unacceptable and could be affecting how many visitors you get and the kind of experience they have.
Again, some downtime is ok now and then. Ideally, though, it should be the kind that is planned for basic maintenance or upgrades and that you are warned about beforehand so you can prepare.
Server Crowding
Another reason it’s time to move on is if you find that your server is getting a bit crowded. Unless you have your own dedicated server, you’re sharing yours with other companies. The number of resources they consume will have a direct effect on how your server is able to perform. If you find that your web pages are loading slowly, for example, it might be because another company on your server is pulling resources.
This can happen without your hosting company breaking their contract with you too. That’s why your only solution may be going elsewhere or, again, just choosing a dedicated server for your company’s exclusive use.
Lack of Scalability
The main reason companies move on from their old hosting company is because they’ve simply outgrown them. In fact, you could be the customer draining resources from others on your shared server.
A lot of times, though, this means that your increase in business demands greater support from your hosting company. You may have had to learn the hard way that your provider only keeps normal office hours, something that doesn’t do you a lot of good if you get traffic from the other side of the world.
Even if your provider claims 24/7 support, it’s a good idea to test that out. Call them at odd hours from time to time to make sure they’re there.
