How does Kubernetes work?

Worker nodes run pods, which are made up of containers. Each node is its own Linux environment and could be either a physical or virtual machine.

Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield said the workplace chat company is now offering “free upgrades to paid plans” for teams working on coronavirus pandemic research, response, or mitigation.

That means any team working on a collaborative research, response, or mitigation to the coronavirus will get access to a paid plan for free. Slack has a free version of its product that anyone can download and start using, and then offers different levels of paid plans with more features. 

Interested teams can email a special address, [email protected], to get set up. Butterfield said teams can also email to set up a consultation on how best to get started with remote collaboration.

“We’ve done hundreds of upgrades and consultations already and have an incredibly helpful, speedy and energized team standing by. We’re grateful to be able to help where we can,” he tweeted on Monday. 

Butterfield’s comments come as more companies ask employees to work from home to try and mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and as a result, cloud software tools like Slack and videoconferencing tool Zoom are seeing a lot more interest and usage. On Monday, Zoom was the top free app on Apple’s App Store.

Last week during the company’s earnings call with analysts, Slack said it has been seeing a significant spike in new users for its free product amid the coronavirus outbreak. However, they said its too early to tell if that will impact business going forward.

Although 2019 closed with good numbers, the server market is now facing the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus crisis.

The year 2019 ended with positive figures regarding the global server market, increasing revenues by 5.1% and shipments by 11.7%, according to Gartner, thus slightly improving the annual computation figures. However, compared to 2018, the numbers are less favorable as server shipments worldwide decreased by 3.1%, and server revenues decreased by 2.5% compared to the full year of 2018.

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak is expected to moderate expected growth.

Cadence confirms that the first DDR5 memories will work at 4800 MHz, they will arrive this year

While JEDEC has not yet publicly released the final version of the DDR5 memory standard, major chipmakers already have access to their documents to begin manufacturing both the drivers and memory chips, and Cadence revealed some important details about this new standard.

The first information confirmed by Cadence is that the base specification will be 4800MHz, being the minimum frequency that we will see in these new reports. We will also see more frequent models, although the company did not specify what they would be.

Bandwidth

Other important information is that the main objective of the new standard is not bandwidth but capacity, so we will see conventional modules of up to 256GB with access to data in less than 100ns. Although there are currently 256GB modules, they use special technologies that are only supported on servers, and not by any conventional processor or motherboard.

In their Annual cybernetic threats report, the cybersecurity firm Symantec says that they’ve blocked almost 4 million attacks of this type over the last year.

The Hijacking of data or Ransomware and Cryptojacking or use of a third party’s computer to mine cryptocurrencies, considered as the main cyber threats in the last years, a new one joins, Formjacking.

This modality comes into play when infected web servers remove the billing information of customers. In fact, during each month of 2018, more than 4.800 web sites were compromised by a Formjacking code. The cybersecurity firm Symantec says that they’ve blocked almost 4 million attacks of this type.

How does it work

In their Annual threats report, the company explains that formjacking has shown an exponential growth (and possibly big earnings for the delinquents), projecting a possible increase this year.

“By using third-party apps to infiltrate in the websites more frequently, formjacking also illustrates even further the dangers of the supply chain attacks, a growing weakness highlighted in last year’s report,” the firm indicated.

The crime operates with just a few simple lines of code loaded in a website, representing a significant threat for online retailers or anyone who collects personal identity information of their clients through their website.

Even though authorities and cybersecurity companies have strongly attacked modalities like ransomware and cryptojacking, these haven’t disappeared.

The report reflects that with cryptocurrencies devaluation, becoming rich through cryptojacking isn’t as easy as before, and some attackers have switched to more lucrative activities.

However, according to Symantec, the attacks are easy to instigate and manage, which means that those criminals who participate in the game in the long term can still make money. That firm claims to have blocked four times more cryptojacking attacks last year than in 2017 and stresses that it continues to be an active threat in 2019.

On the other hand, ransomware continues to offer the opportunity to generate large sums of money. The SamSam gang is estimated to have made $ 6 million from such attacks.

These criminals are increasingly targeting companies, a high-value target. Ransomware infections grew in business environments by 12%, while consumer infections decreased.
