If you deal with servers in any way—even if your company simply uses them—you’ve probably heard of server administrators before. Of course, that’s no guarantee that you understand what his job entails. This is perfectly understandable, given the vast terminology that involves servers. However, if you’re curious, the below should provide you with clarification.

Server Administrator

To put it simply, a server administrator is in charge of the computer technology a company or other organization uses. This means overseeing their servers, workstations, and network. In order to keep them all running successfully, they monitor the network and all the computers using it, looking for any problems that might come up.

As you can imagine, this is no easy job. Most server administrators not only have a degree in something like information technology, computer science or information systems but have certifications in various vendors as well. Typically, they’ll employ more than one type of operating system to do their job.

Very few people become system administrators without first working in some kind of support role. This previous experience is usually essential for an administrator to later do their job.

Server Administrator Role

There are a number of smaller tasks that typically make up a server administrator’s role. They have to manage not just their own operating systems, but all those used by the staff as well. Server administrators are regularly called upon to install various programs too, add in users as necessary, fix their access if something occurs, and update the operating systems so that they are always available in the latest version.

This also means they must make sure the security policy place is running properly and updated with any new versions. The moment security software becomes out of date, malicious hackers can strike.

Of course, as the name suggests, server administrators must manage the company’s server. Without this essential operation, the entire business suffers. They don’t just keep tabs on the server or communicate with hosting companies, though, administrators are also expected to ensure the network is secure, install new services and set up the company’s domain.
