Cyber-warfare on the Rise
We already saw this a bit in 2014 with accusations that North Korea hacked into Sony’s servers in retaliation for a movie they didn’t care for. That being said, expect the threat of true cyber-warfare to grow in 2015.
In the past, warfare was the realm of the wealthiest states. To put it simply, those with the biggest bombs ruled the day. More and more, however, that isn’t the case. Small countries that lack the resources to create huge armies and powerful war machines can easily support an army of hackers capable of leveling a rival in cyber-terms. Syria, Iran and, of course, North Korea have already started this process. You can be sure the U.S. and its allies have too.
Organized Cybercrime Will Grow
Another thing we saw more of in 2015 was cyber attacks on private organizations. However, we also learned that many of these attacks were carried out by teams of operators working in collusion with one another.
This means there’s a pretty good chance you can expect organized crime to follow a lead in 2015. While attacks by groups like Anonymous and LulzSec have largely been to prove a political point or simply for the sake of mischief, they’ve proven that almost no one is safe. The repercussions of this are that more and more private companies now need to be more careful than ever before.
The MtGox debacle involving Bitcoin showed that criminals could steal millions and disappear without a trace. When organized crime learns how to do this with banks and other businesses, Pandora’s Box will be opened.
Mobile Devices Will Be Targeted
All things considered, mobile devices got it pretty easy in 2014. That will most likely change this year and Android will be the one to suffer most.
Phishing attacks will be widely available to the criminal underground who will then use them to redirect users from valid sites to their own. Once again, expect online banking sites to be the target of choice.
