Picking a good domain name may be helpful, but that helpfulness pales in comparison to the damage picking a poor domain name can do. The best examples of disaster are the ones that look wrong as domain names, such as the website for “Kids Exchange”, which on “Kidsexchange.com” may also read, “Kid sex change.” Your domain name can become a big lead weight around the neck of your online success, so here are few tips to help.

Pick one that will not limit the use of your website

Believe it or not, the use you have for your website right now may have changed within six months. The companies that had domain names using the word “rent” often regretted it when a few months later they decided to start selling on the website, as well as part-exchange and buying too. Be careful when being specific, and don’t forget that even Bed, Bath and Beyond added “Beyond” just to be on the safe side.

Can your domain name remind people of your service or products?

Again, remember the tip above when you pick your domain name, but you can be a letting broader in your application of service and product names. For example, if you only sell Ford cars, then you do not have to put Ford in the domain name; you can just use the word “car” or “cars.” That way you remind people of what you sell or do, and if you start selling cars other than Fords you are still in the clear.

Pick a memorable domain name

There are some very nutty domain names out there that only exist because they are memorable. You can pull a similar trick, but you do not have to. The domain name shouldn’t have to be etched on the brain of your user, just so long as it is not too difficult to remember. For example, “MandysPies” is easier to remember than “MandysPieEateryAndBakery.” Also, note the tip from the introduction, as Mandy’s Pies also reads “Mandy Spies” in a domain name.

One that has no hyphens and numbers

Do not add hyphens and be very wary of numbers. Hyphens make a website domain harder to remember, harder to type into an address bar and harder to quote to friends. Numbers offer similar problems and should on domain names if it is heavily engrained in your brand. Even the company “3” doesn’t use the number three in their website domain (it is three.co.uk).

ServerPronto offers the best affordable and secure hosting service in all dedicated server packages.

Photo cred: Flickr /Â bloggingbookshelf

Your domain name is not going to make or break your company in the online world, but it can be a hindrance.
