It distinguishes legitimate packets for different varieties of connections. Only the packets that match a known and active connection are allowed to pass by the Firewall; any others are rejected. This process is also known as Dynamic Packet Filtering.

Packet filtering

This is a very basic Firewall method that works for keeping out the basic intrusive attacks. Rules are set in order to create filters, and any suspicious traffic is flagged up by the filters and is hindered from passing through.

Proxy service

This is a Firewall method that allows an application to act as an intermediary between systems. Any information passed from either the Internet or the network is analyzed.

Having a software Firewall

Many people with home computers have a software Firewall. It offers antivirus and other such protection all at once. It can protect against incoming and outgoing problems as well as worms and other such things. Most hackers work hard to try and get around such Firewalls as their number one priority. The software should run in the background and all the time, and it must regularly update itself in order to avoid modern threats.

Having a hardware Firewall

These are often built into things such as routers and network devices. They allow one piece of software to protect an entire network. It acts as a bottleneck for traffic where it all has to go through one area. It may use packet filtering to figure out which traffic is malicious and which is okay.

Which is the best?

Choosing which one to use yourself, hardware or software, is up to you and depends upon how many computers you have and how secure you need your network to be. There is also the fact that software changes all the time. One piece of software may be great until a new threat comes out next week that makes it useless. Your best bet is to go for a software Firewall that has a good track record, especially when it comes to frequency of important updates.

ServerPronto offers the best affordable and secure hosting service in all dedicated server packages.

Photo cred: Flickr / Leonardo Rizzi

The main aim of a Firewall is to stop intruders from getting into your network or your computer.
