So, you’ve installed Ubuntu 11.10 and found out that it’s all gone and replaced by what seems to be too good of a qualificative of a sidebar and what appears to be a poignant attempt to kill all interest on an open source Operating System. Fear not as we can still make the best of it.<\/div>\n

Ubuntu desktop had a very easy, kind interface since the times of 7.04, about 4 years ago, the menu on the top, bar on the bottom, happy explorer on the chair, never a miscommunication, yet this has been replaced by a mac-os-ish-windows-7 look. To get rid of this, follow this guide that I’ve just re-checked for you:<\/span><\/div>\n

1. Sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Reboot, before logging in , click the gear button and select GNOME Classic (No Effects)<\/div>\n

3. Add \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcppa:jconti\/gnome3\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc to your Software Sources (top left, click the gear, ctrl panel -> add sw sources)<\/p>\n

On terminal: sudo apt-get update, then \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsudo apt-get install indicator-applet-complete\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/div>\n
Alt+Right click on the top panel<\/div>\n
Add new panel<\/div>\n
Alt+Right click on the new panel<\/div>\n
change orientation to top<\/div>\n
Choose \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcProperties\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/div>\n
Select the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbackground\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 tab<\/div>\n
Select background image and click the button<\/div>\n
Navigate\/select \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc\/usr\/share\/themes\/Ambiance\/gtk-2.0\/apps\/img\/panel.png\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/div>\n

4. \u00c2\u00a0Alt+Right click on the old panel and delete it<\/div>\n
Alt+Right click on the new top panel<\/div>\n
Choose \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcAdd Applets\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/div>\n
Add \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcIndicator Applet Complete\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/div>\n
Alt + mid click the applet and move right<\/div>\n
Add ‘Menu Bar’<\/div>\n

5. \u00c2\u00a0Open a new Terminal<\/div>\n
Run: gksu gedit \/usr\/share\/themes\/Ambiance\/gtk-3.0\/apps\/gnome-panel.css<\/div>\n
Add \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc-PanelMenuBar-icon-visible: true;\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (no quotes) to the bottom of the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcPanelMenuBar.menubar.menuitem\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 item just above and before the } symbol<\/div>\n
Save<\/div>\n
Logout and login<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
6. \u00c2\u00a0Open a Terminal<\/div>\n
Enter: gksu gedit \/usr\/share\/gnome-session\/sessions\/gnome-classic.session<\/div>\n
Change the line:<\/div>\n
RequiredProviders=windowmanager;notifications;<\/div>\n
to:<\/div>\n
RequiredProviders=windowmanager;<\/div>\n
Save and close<\/div>\n

7. reboot, login and select \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcGNOME Classic\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/div>\n
