But sometimes users want to manage their storage by themselves; here is how to do it:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Linux:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>to get an overview of your hard drives and to see partitions such as \/dev\/hda and \/dev\/hdb<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">fdisk \u00e2\u20ac\u201cl<\/pre>\n<p>to manage the slave drive<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">fdisk \/dev\/hdb<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">p - to see partitions<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to delete partitions<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">n - to create new partition<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">m \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to display help in fdisk<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">w \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to write changes<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">reboot<\/pre>\n<p>to format the partition<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">mke2fs \u00e2\u20ac\u201cj \/dev\/hdb1<\/pre>\n<p>go into nano \/etc\/fstab and add the following to the end of the file<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\/dev\/hdb1    \/home    ext3    defaults    1 2<\/pre>\n<p>to make the partitions usable and visible with df -h<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">mount \u00e2\u20ac\u201ca<\/pre>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Windows:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Access the built-in utility &#8220;<strong>Disk Management<\/strong>&#8220;. Go into the Control Panel -&gt; go under <strong>Administrative Tools<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Computer Management<\/strong> -&gt; on the left-hand side underneath <strong>Storage<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Disk Management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Look on the bottom right and you&#8217;ll see something that looks like this picture. The disk with all of the unallocated space is what you&#8217;re after. Right, click on it. Select <strong>New Partition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-272\" title=\"install-ide-hard-drive-partitions1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"199\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A wizard will pop up and walk you through this process. Choose a partition size. If this is a secondary drive then you&#8217;re obviously after pure storage space so just make it a primary partition and allocate 100% of your space to it.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/resource\/images\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions3.gif\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-273\" title=\"install-ide-hard-drive-partitions3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"380\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/resource\/images\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions3.gif\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The followed screen looks like this. Just clicking next until you get here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-274\" title=\"install-ide-hard-drive-partitions2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.serverprontouniversity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/install-ide-hard-drive-partitions2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"386\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re only using Windows 2000\/XP\/Vista\/Windows 7 and Windows server 2000\/2003\/2008, it is suggested using <strong>NTFS<\/strong>.
