Almost once every other year!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"bf7p1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"bf7p1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"bf7p1-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px;\" data-offset-key=\"aopv-0-0\">This is a major issue for companies and one that amounts to lost revenue and reputation. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\" style=\"font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"aopv-1-0\">But why aren&#8217;t all data centers able to withstand natural disasters, and what can you do to keep your servers online<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px;\" data-offset-key=\"aopv-2-0\">?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"38ipr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"38ipr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"38ipr-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6kqiu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kqiu-0-0\">Harvey and Irma are Perfect Examples of Natural Disasters Which May Disrupt Services<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"cfobt-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cfobt-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cfobt-0-0\">The last major hurricane, Sandy, took out major data centers in New York. Now, with a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterdynamics.com\/content-tracks\/design-build\/uk-govt-climate-change-report-details-risks-for-data-centers\/97693.fullarticle\"><span data-offset-key=\"cfobt-1-0\">wetter, warmer climate<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"cfobt-2-0\"> in store for the future, storms are going to become a regular occurrence. We got the first taste of that this year with Hurricane Harvey.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"a58pb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"a58pb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"a58pb-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"2a5ae-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2a5ae-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2a5ae-0-0\">Harvey dropped unprecedented levels of rain on Texas. This caused many data centers to fear and prepare for the worst: flooding. Flooding is one of the biggest potential threats to data centers. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2a5ae-1-0\">The ability to take down generators, damage servers, and more makes it a difficult problem for data centers<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2a5ae-2-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"fv3d5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fv3d5-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fv3d5-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"4qr91-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4qr91-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4qr91-0-0\">Most data centers in Houston were lucky enough to emerge from Harvey unscathed, but that doesn&#8217;t mean the storm was not a threat<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4qr91-1-0\">! Many data centers prepared for the worst with stockpiles of food, water, cots, and more. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4qr91-2-0\">Some even utilized washing machines and showers for staff and customers to stay on site for extended periods<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4qr91-3-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"fcn55-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fcn55-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fcn55-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"c8hq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"c8hq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8hq-0-0\">These preparations helped but wouldn&#8217;t have mattered if flood waters caused major damage. Most data centers <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8hq-1-0\">were positioned<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"c8hq-2-0\"> in areas not as affected by flooding. This is why many were able to stay online, even in the face of the disaster.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"a1eab-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"a1eab-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"a1eab-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"51f9d-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"51f9d-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"51f9d-0-0\">But only days later, another very powerful storm <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"51f9d-1-0\">is headed<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"51f9d-2-0\"> towards America&#8217;s coasts.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"ad7fa-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ad7fa-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ad7fa-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"5h12t-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5h12t-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5h12t-0-0\">Hurricane Irma, currently a category 5, is a hurricane so strong it may leave Puerto Rico without power for months<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5h12t-1-0\">. One can only imagine the type of damage that could do to a data center. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"6eq0p-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6eq0p-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6eq0p-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"bvum6-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"bvum6-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bvum6-0-0\">The storm has the ability to rip roofing straight off of buildings and destroy everything inside<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bvum6-1-0\">. A storm like this could take out data centers across the east coast depending on its pathway. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"c3f8i-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"c3f8i-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c3f8i-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"1if0t-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1if0t-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"1if0t-0-0\">So it begs the question: If a storm like Irma rips through your data center, what can you do to prevent your server from going offline<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"1if0t-1-0\">?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"33chf-0-0\">\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"33chf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"33chf-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3sqer-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3sqer-0-0\">How to Protect Your Server Against Natural Disasters<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"5fuun-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5fuun-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5fuun-0-0\">Currently, most data centers run on a fault tolerant network, use backup generators, and more<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5fuun-1-0\">. This still may not be enough though! A large storm (or other natural disasters) can still take these data centers offline.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"ik1r-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ik1r-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ik1r-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"9bvsi-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9bvsi-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9bvsi-0-0\">Protecting your server from natural disasters is doable, but requires specific planning on your part<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9bvsi-1-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"445ln-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"445ln-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"445ln-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"5m34k-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5m34k-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5m34k-0-0\">For starters, you need to ensure your server host&#8217;s data center is built to withstand natural disasters<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5m34k-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5m34k-2-0\">It&#8217;s impossible to withstand all natural disasters, but a good deal of fault tolerance and redundancy will go a long way<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5m34k-3-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"d9dg7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"d9dg7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d9dg7-0-0\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7e6hc\" data-offset-key=\"78ouk-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"78ouk-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"78ouk-0-0\">Still, this won&#8217;t stop you from extreme circumstances.
